Tobacco Harm Reduction Update - July 1st, 2015
FDA, Harm Reduction Research, THR Education, Taxation, Sales Ban For Minors, Vaping Bans, Smoking Ban, Smokeless Tobacco Use Ban, Packaging Restriction, International Trade, Public Health Ethics (and lack thereof), Prohibition, Junk Science, Propaganda and Lies.
Reminder: July 2 (today) deadline for public comments regarding FDA's third so-called scientific workshop on e-cigarettes on June 1 & 2
FDA issues Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) for packaging restrictions and warning labels on e-liquid bottles despite having no legal authority to regulate the products unless/until Final Rule is issued for FDA's Deeming Regulation, which would ban ALL bottles of nicotine e-liquid and nearly all other e-cigs. FDA's ANPRM touts CDC's false fear mongering claims about e-liquid and e-cig use to confuse, scare and lobby for agency's Deeming Regulation, but fails to acknowledge that Deeming Regulation would ban all bottles of e-liquid; sixty day public comment period.
American Vaping Association: FDA jumps the gun on e-cigarette regulations
(presents far more objective information on e-liquid than Obama's FDA or news media)
AP, Reuters, CNN, LA Times and Wall St Journal articles on FDA's new ANPRM for packaging standards and labels on e-liquid (which has saved the lives of several million smokers while posing very low risks) repeat false fear mongering claims by DHHS about e-liquid and e-cig use, promote FDA's Deeming Regulation (that would ban ALL e-liquid bottles) without noting FDA's contradictory regulatory proposals for e-liquid.
NIH promotes 73 minute speech by FDA/NIH funded e-cig propagandist Stan Glantz demonizing e-cigs, touting junk science, lying about the scientific evidence to confuse, scare and lobby for cigarette protecting e-cig bans, regulations, taxes and lawsuits.
Carl Phillips - Dear @FDATobacco: Stanton Glantz's junk science reflects upon you
Op/ed on FDA deeming regulation repeats agency's false claims about e-cigs without fact checking, fails to admit it would ban >99.9% of nicotine e-cigs now on the market
Tobacco Control has put a paywall for the new and important MN e-cig survey highlighted in last week's THR Update (finding daily vapers are vastly different from experimenters or occasional users, and delineating how surveys that rely upon 'past 30 day' use of e-cigs, including DHHS surveys, generate misleading results).

2012/13 survey of US adults found just 11% correctly believed e-cigs are much less harmful than cigarettes, just 51% correctly believed e-cigs are less harmful than cigarettes, and just 9% correctly believed smokeless tobacco is less harmful than cigarettes. While documenting that DHHS and other THR opponents have deceived most Americans to believe very low risk smokefree alternatives are as harmful as cigarettes, the biased survey falsely informed participants that e-cigs were new types of cigarettes.
