PHE - E-cigarette Report

Public Health England’s endorsement of vaping is International “game changer”

Public Health England commissions lengthy report: “E-cigarettes: an evidence update”, that objectively assesses the scientific evidence on vapor products (in sharp contrast to fear mongering lies and bans pushed by Obama’s DHHS, Big Pharma shills, JAMA, etc.)

Public Health England report “E-cigarettes: a new foundation for evidence-based policy and practice” documents the health benefits of vaping in England, recommends new policies and practices to encourage more smokers to switch to vaping

Public Health England says “E-cigarettes are 95% less harmful to your health than normal cigarettes,” but provides no evidence e-cigs pose 5% of cigarette risks. Says “When supported by a smoking cessation service, they help most smokers to quit tobacco altogether,” but provides no evidence cessation services assist smokers switch to vaping.

US FDA’s proposed e-cig ban

E-cig makers warn new regs would extinguish industry (Godshall comment details how)

8 US Senate Democrats urge FDA to impose even more unwarranted regulations on e-cigs even though FDA’s proposed deeming regulation would ban >99.9% of nicotine vapor products now on the market, repeat false fear mongering claims

FDA/NIH funded junk study published/hyped by JAMA falsely insinuates e-cigs are gateways to cigarettes and OTP to confuse, scare and lobby for FDA’s proposal to ban >99.9% of nicotine vapor products on the market. Note that study was coauthored by conflicted former TPSAC Chair Jonathan Samet, purported to study potential gateway effects of e-cigs, but only ask irrelevant questions about “ever use” of e-cigs and “past six month” smoking, then improperly excluded all smokers from the data analysis, and then failed to acknowledge any of overwhelming evidence disproving authors’ assertions.

JAMA invites Adam Leventhal (one of the FDA/NIH funded authors) to further hype terribly designed and irreconcilably biased study that deceitfully insinuated e-cigs are gateways to cigarettes (which the study never found, nor was designed to study).

JAMA invites Big Pharma funded Nancy Rigotti to misrepresent the evidence, perpetuate the “gateway” lie about e-cigs and promote FDAs’ proposed e-cig ban

JAMA touts junk study that falsely insinuates e-cigs are gateways to cigarettes, grossly misrepresents the scientific evidence, demonizes the lifesaving products

Obama’s NIH promotes terribly designed junk study it (along with FDA) funded and JAMA published falsely insinuating that e-cigarettes are gateways to cigarette and OTP smoking, promotes NIDA’s false fear mongering claims about e-cigarettes and nicotine

Big Pharma financed CTFK’s Matt Myers further misrepresents JAMA junk study on e-cigs to confuse, scare and lobby for FDA’s proposed e-cig ban

MSA financed Legacy Foundation (which urged FDA to ban e-cigs in 2009) promotes FDA/NIH funded e-cig junk study in JAMA, announces name change to Truth Initiative despite its many false and misleading claims about e-cigs, smokeless tobacco, industry marketing practices, and FDA’s proposal to ban >99.9% of nicotine e-cigs

Big Pharma financed CTFK touts Legacy’s so-called Truth ad that Lies about flavored OTP to lobby for FDA proposal to ban >99.9% of e-cigs and many OTP

FDA/NIH funded junk e-cig study in JAMA falsely claiming e-cigs are gateways to cigarettes deceives dozens of lazy stupid news reporters and editors to repeat false fear mongering claims and promote FDA’s proposal to ban >99.9% of nicotine e-cigs

JAMA study in the media

Commentaries on FDA/NIH funded junk e-cig study in JAMA

NPR repeats fear mongering claims in JAMA junk study, interviews conflicted former TPSAC Chair Jonathan Samet (who was funded by FDA/NIH to conduct the terribly designed study to lobby for FDA’s proposed e-cig ban) and AVA’s Greg Conley (who provided objective and accurate information about e-cigs).

Mike Siegel: US District Court decision may cast doubt on Constitutionality of FDA upcoming e-cigarette regulations

More FDA

Study in JAMA finds FDA approved nicotine patches ineffective for smoking cessation after 24 weeks

Study finds sharp increase in varenicline (Chantix) sales/use had no impact on US smoking cessation rate (4.5% in 2003, 4.7% in 2010/11), finds 29% and 31% of US smokers (including 33% and 35% of daily smokers) used an FDA approved drug for a cessation attempt in 2003 and 2010/11 respectively, finds 180 day cigarette abstinence rates of 13% for varenicline users and 12% for NRT/buproprian users, documents why (but fails to acknowledge that) DHHS should embrace far less harmful e-cigs and smokeless tobacco for smokers and why FDA should rescind its proposed e-cig ban.

Carl Phillips: On the complete absence of ethical thinking in tobacco control in the context of denicotinized cigarettes

Stan Glantz finally submits a rationale comment to FDA, criticizes agency for redacting so much of Swedish Match’s amended MRTP application as to provide “nothing of substance remaining upon which for the public to make an informed comment.”

CDC wisely advocates for smokefree indoor public places, but agency still funds state and local health departments to lie about e-cigs and lobby to ban vaping (by deceitfully redefining “smoking” as including the use of smokefree vapor products).

US Military

US Military Health System and Defense Health Agency article falsely claims e-cigs are addicting nonsmoking youth, renormalizing smoking, target marketed to youth, poisoning children, and haven’t helped smokers quit smoking; cites agency’s 2013 “Frequent Questions about Electronic Cigarettes” that repeats false fear mongering claims.

McConnell says White House will need GOP to pass Trans-Pacific Partnership, wary of potential carve-outs

Anti tobacco industry extremists defend Australia’s plain packaging law (that didn’t reduce cigarette consumption), insist that TPP must let other countries pass similar laws

E-cig Prohibition

Vaping Bans

CASAA Call to Action urges Topeka (KS) vapers to oppose proposed vaping ban

SFATA’s Mark Burton: Burdsensome vaping regulation about revenue, not health

Junk Science, Propaganda and Lies

Indiana Youth Survey prioritizes demonization of e-cigs over concern for many truly harmful activities, falsely classifies e-cigs as tobacco products (even though survey never inquired if e-cigs used contained nicotine, and despite Indiana statutes defining e-cigarettes different than tobacco products), finds:
- cigarette smoking among 9th graders declined from 15.2% in 2010 to 7.7% in 2015,
- cigarette smoking among 12th graders declined from 24.6% in 2011 to 16.2% in 2015,
- 11.5% of 9-12th graders reported smoking cigarettes in past month in 2015,
- 15% of 7-12th graders reported use of an e-cig in past month in 2015 (but survey didn’t ask if e-cig(s) contained nicotine),
- 24.6% of 9th-12th graders reported drinking alcohol in past month,
- 11.2% of 9th-12th graders reported binge drinking in past month,
- 14.4% of 9th-12th graders reported smoking marijuana in past month,
- >16% of 9th-12th graders reported considering suicide in past year, and
- >11% of 9th-12th graders reported making a plan about attempting suicide in past year.

IN Youth Survey publisher Ruth Gassman falsely tells news media e-cigs are as harmful as cigarettes and don’t help smokers quit smoking, describes e-cig use in “past month” as “heavily used” and “alarming”, says she’s concerned cigarette use has declined; news articles falsely refer to vaping as “smoking” to further confuse and scare.
